Expensing chit in Justworks
Justworks is the only platform in this whole set that publishes its default expense categories, which means it is the only page here that can answer the category question outright instead of telling you to guess. A $129 work device lands in Office expenses, or Home office expenses if you are remote, with Other business expenses as the fallback. No invented category names required.

How to get it covered
Every step below comes from the platform's own documentation, linked beside it, with the date we read it.
- 1
Go to You, then Expenses, and choose Create Request.

- 2
Choose Add New Expense, then set the transaction date, enter the amount, and select the category.

Fill in whichever fields your administrator configured — merchant, description, receipt, attendees — and attach the invoice PDF. Justworks allows multiple receipts on a single expense if you need them.

Review the summary and the approving manager, then Submit for Approval. There is a mobile version of the same flow.

What your receipt has to show
Request name, transaction date, amount and category are required on every expense category. A receipt field is always visible, but your administrator decides whether it is optional or required.

On mobile, Justworks supports only photo formats such as JPEG and PNG — no PDF. Submit from the desktop site if you want to attach the invoice PDF itself. Descriptions cap at 500 characters.

Ask your manager
Most people never ask, and the ones who do write it badly — leading with what they want instead of what it does for the work. Fill in two fields and send this.
Hi — I'd like to expense a chit AI voice recorder ($129). It's a card-sized recorder I hold down to capture what was said, and it writes the notes and the follow-ups afterwards. As account executive, most of what I need to write down later gets said out loud first — in meetings, on site, in the car afterwards. This closes the gap between saying it and it being written down, which is where things currently get lost. I'd put it through Justworks. I'll have an itemised invoice — merchant, date, line items, total and payment method — so there's nothing outstanding for the receipt. Happy to write up how it goes after a month if that's useful.
Questions
Good questions
Which category do I choose?
Justworks publishes its defaults: Car and mileage, Home office expenses, Meals and entertainment, Office expenses, Other business expenses, and Travel expenses. A recorder used for work sits in Office expenses, or Home office expenses if you work remotely. There is no Equipment or Software default, so do not go looking for one.
Do I definitely need to attach a receipt?
Maybe not — Justworks says a receipt field is always visible but your administrator chooses whether it is optional or required. Attach it anyway. An itemised invoice is what makes an approval quick and an audit boring.
Can I do this from my phone?
Yes, but with a catch: the Justworks mobile flow supports only photo formats such as JPEG and PNG, not PDF. If you want to attach the invoice PDF itself rather than a screenshot of it, submit from the desktop site.
I cannot find Expenses in my account.
The employee Expenses tool is available on the PEO product, and contractors are routed through an admin-side reimbursement path instead. If the tab is missing, that is usually why — ask whoever administers your Justworks account.
Does Justworks have a stipend or lifestyle spending account?
No. Its lifestyle benefits are curated partner deals rather than a discretionary allowance you can spend freely. Justworks integrates with JOON for lifestyle spending accounts, so if you have a stipend it is probably administered there — our JOON guide covers that flow.

This is general information, not tax advice. How a reimbursement is taxed depends on the plan your employer wrote, and only they — or your own accountant — can tell you which one you are spending from.
