Using your Compt stipend on chit
Compt is the simplest of these to buy against, because there is nothing to route around: no card to be declined, no marketplace to be absent from. You buy it, you upload the receipt, it comes back through payroll. Compt also runs an explicit Productivity category — described around note-taking tools — and a separate Business Expenses flow that is worth understanding before you file, because the two are taxed differently.

How to get it covered
Every step below comes from the platform's own documentation, linked beside it, with the date we read it.
- 1
There is no card and no marketplace to navigate — Compt's own words. You buy from whoever you like and claim it back, which means no merchant restriction can decline you.

If your employer would rather treat it as work equipment than as a lifestyle perk, Compt has a separate Business Expenses flow: create an expense report, add the expense, choose reimbursement, and submit for approval. That is the route that is generally not taxable to you.

What your receipt has to show

Ask your manager
Most people never ask, and the ones who do write it badly — leading with what they want instead of what it does for the work. Fill in two fields and send this.
Hi — I'd like to expense a chit AI voice recorder ($129). It's a card-sized recorder I hold down to capture what was said, and it writes the notes and the follow-ups afterwards. As account executive, most of what I need to write down later gets said out loud first — in meetings, on site, in the car afterwards. This closes the gap between saying it and it being written down, which is where things currently get lost. I'd put it through Compt. I'll have an itemised invoice — merchant, date, line items, total and payment method — so there's nothing outstanding for the receipt. Happy to write up how it goes after a month if that's useful.
Questions
Good questions
Does Compt restrict which vendors I can buy from?
No. Compt's position is that there is no separate card to manage, no marketplace to navigate, and that employees are not limited to whoever the platform partnered with. You buy from anyone and submit the receipt.
Which stipend category should I file this under?
Compt's category list includes Office Equipment, Professional Development and an explicit Productivity category — which Compt describes around note-taking tools, though its examples are software. Your employer chooses which categories exist for you; pick the one your plan actually funds.
What has to be on the receipt?
Compt asks that receipts show vendor, date, and total, with one receipt per purchase. The invoice PDF we email carries those three plus itemised line items and the payment method.
Should I use a stipend claim or the Business Expenses flow?
They are different things and they are taxed differently. A lifestyle stipend reimbursement is generally taxable income to you. A business-expense reimbursement under your employer's accountable plan generally is not. Compt supports both — the Business Expenses flow is the second one. Which is available to you depends on your employer's policy, and this is not tax advice.
When do I get the money?
Approved reimbursements flow into your next payroll cycle. Compt directs employees to the FAQ tab inside the app for their own company's timing, because it is set by the employer rather than by Compt.

This is general information, not tax advice. How a reimbursement is taxed depends on the plan your employer wrote, and only they — or your own accountant — can tell you which one you are spending from.
