Fringe will not cover chit — and here is why

We would rather say this plainly than write you six steps that end in nothing. Fringe is a closed marketplace: no card, no reimbursement, points instead of dollars, and a catalogue built deliberately around services rather than things. There is no route by which a purchase made anywhere else gets paid for with Fringe points. If Fringe is the only benefit you have, the route that does work is your employer's expense policy — which is usually better for you anyway, because it is not taxed.

How to get it covered

We checked, and this one genuinely does not work this way. Here is what does instead.

  1. Fringe has no card and no reimbursement. Its own pitch is to ditch prepaid cards and reimbursements — employees spend points directly inside the Fringe marketplace, and Fringe describes this as no cards to ship and no reimbursement needed.

  2. The marketplace is services, not hardware. Fringe's lifestyle catalogue runs to streaming, sitters, hotels, food delivery and fitness, and Fringe states its philosophy directly: fund vacations, massages, concerts and hobbies rather than purchases on Amazon.

  3. You are spending points, not dollars. Fringe describes employees browsing options and using points like a digital wallet — so there is no mechanism by which an outside purchase enters the system at all.

The path that works anywhere

This is true on every platform on this page, including the ones whose own instructions we could not read.

  1. 1

Buy it here, on your own card, the way you would anything else.

  2. 2

The receipt arrives by email within a few minutes — an itemised invoice PDF, not a screenshot of a confirmation page.

  3. 3

Open your benefits or expense app and start a new claim, reimbursement or expense report.

  4. 4

Attach the PDF. Enter the merchant as chit, the date on the invoice, and the total.

  5. 5

Pick the category your employer uses for work equipment or home office. If there is a description field, describe it as an AI voice recorder — a productivity device.

  6. 6

Submit, and keep the email. If a reviewer asks for anything else, everything they need is on that invoice.

What your receipt has to show

  • Merchant name

  • Purchase date

  • Itemised line items, priced separately

  • Total paid

  • Payment method

Expensing an AI voice recorderDraft
Hi —

I'd like to expense a chit AI voice recorder ($129). It's a card-sized recorder I hold down to capture what was said, and it writes the notes and the follow-ups afterwards.

As account executive, most of what I need to write down later gets said out loud first — in meetings, on site, in the car afterwards. This closes the gap between saying it and it being written down, which is where things currently get lost.

I'd put it through Fringe. I'll have an itemised invoice — merchant, date, line items, total and payment method — so there's nothing outstanding for the receipt.

Happy to write up how it goes after a month if that's useful.

Questions

Good questions

Can I get reimbursed through Fringe?

No. Fringe's own marketing leads with ditching prepaid cards and reimbursements — employees spend inside the marketplace and Fringe advertises no receipts and no administrative hassle. There is no claim to file.

Does the Fringe marketplace carry physical products?

Its lifestyle catalogue is overwhelmingly services — streaming, sitters, hotels, food delivery, fitness. Physical goods appear mainly through company-branded swag and gifting, which are employer-initiated rather than something you choose. Fringe states its intent openly: fund vacations, massages, concerts and hobbies.

So what should I do instead?

Ask whether your employer has an expense policy for work equipment, separate from the Fringe perk budget. Most companies do, most people never ask, and a business-expense reimbursement for a work device is generally not taxable to you, whereas a lifestyle perk generally is. We have a note on how to ask below.

Could Fringe add chit to its marketplace?

We have no relationship with Fringe and are not implying one. If your employer wants to see it there, they are the ones with the account and the leverage — a request from a paying customer travels further than one from a vendor.

Other platforms

This is general information, not tax advice. How a reimbursement is taxed depends on the plan your employer wrote, and only they — or your own accountant — can tell you which one you are spending from.
