A customer walks into the shop, leans over the drawing, and asks for a change. That conversation is the single most expensive thing in a fab shop when it is not recorded, because the rework argument that follows is entirely about what was agreed. Hold the button at the table: the deviation, the material call-out, the reason. Add the QC observation from the floor while you are at it. By evening the jobs have progressed notes, the material needs are listed, and the rework flags are visible. Six weeks later the question of who asked for the thicker plate has an answer with a date on it. Use it for the material call-out too — the plate thickness, the alloy, the finish the customer asked for at the table. Those three facts drive the purchase order, and they are almost always transmitted verbally from the person who took the meeting to the person who orders steel.
